Il Diario di Alamanno Agostini racconta 100 giorni di carcere di un nobile pisano sospettato di aver collaborato alla preparazione di un moto mazziniano nella Toscana del 1833.
Alamanno Agostini, è un proprietario fondiario colto ed illuminato, nonché, secondo la polizia granducale, uno dei capi riconosciuti del liberalismo pisano. La sera del 4 settembre 1833 viene arrestato a Firenze come misura preventiva e successivamente incarcerato a Portoferraio senza prove né processo, al fine di acquisire una confessione attraverso interrogatori in carcere, fidando nell'isolamento psicologico e nella disperazione del detenuto.
Si tratta di un documento importante per capire il pensiero di un liberale toscano che ha fiducia nella giustizia nonostante i duri metodi di custodia preventiva applicati dai magistrati granducali, permettendo inoltre di comprendere le condizioni di vita nelle prigioni toscane.
